The dry ration is designed to provide a soldier with food for 24 hours
The designer presented the dry ration contents of 20 armies of the world; each such set is designed to provide a soldier with food for 24 hours. Almost all sets include plastic dishes and utensils, napkins, disinfectants, and fuel for starting a fire.
“These examples demonstrate the diversity of both menus, kilocalorie counts, and the camping utensils included with the rations,” Lacchetti explained. He admitted that the functionality of all dry rations captivated him as an industrial design specialist at first glance, and also made him think about how army food reflects differences in national cultures.
ITALY
The field ration of Italian servicemen is an echo of the richness and heartiness of the national cuisine, albeit in a primitive synthetic version: here you have pork in aspic, ravioli with meat sauce, and, of course, pasta.
Soldiers will not have to deny themselves dessert: there is coffee and condensed milk, crackers and jellies, canned fruit salad, chocolate muesli. The picture is completed with salt, sugar, napkins, plastic utensils and dishes, and a blister pack of multivitamins.
RUSSIA
Goulash, liver and meat pâtés, beef with buckwheat, meat with peas and carrots, canned bacon – vegetarians in the ranks of the Russian army probably have a hard time. Maybe just snack on hardtack, processed cheese, jam, and candy? You can wash it down with tea or coffee, adding milk to taste, and finish the meal with multivitamins and chewing gum.
The Russian set also includes water purification tablets, antibacterial and regular napkins, plastic utensils, and matches.
USA
Vegetarian ratatouille with pasta, crackers, almond and poppy seed cake, peanut butter, and you can wash it all down with coffee or a fruit-flavored instant drink. Not much, but at least the set includes toilet paper.
GREAT BRITAIN
As the main course, Her Majesty's warriors receive a chicken sausage with beans, tuna pasta, and, oddly enough, paella. A nice addition is Tabasco sauce. Tea, coffee, compote or fruit drink can be enjoyed with lemon cake, raspberry jam, caramel muesli bar, salted cashews, candy or chocolate spread. Water disinfection tablets, paper towels, and wet wipes are also provided.
LITHUANIA
Stew with pearl barley and canned chicken broth, crackers and nuts, blackcurrant jam and fruit vitamin drink, and for dessert – chocolate.
UKRAINE
For the first course, Ukrainian soldiers have meat broth, for the second – canned goods (three types of meat and one type of fish, namely – sprat). The meal can be finished with crackers, jam, candy, and tea (or fruit drink). Soldiers are also supplied with napkins (regular and disinfecting) and vitamins.
NEW ZEALAND
Chicken in cream sauce with potatoes, Thai-style lamb curry, cheese, bread, canned soup, onion chips, instant noodles; ketchup, salt and pepper to taste. Then also peanuts with raisins, condensed milk, candy, chocolate milk and isotonic drink, tea and coffee, chewing gum.
GERMANY
In the field, Germans dine on Indian rice with chicken cutlet, ravioli with mushroom sauce, and sandwiches with meat pâté. With tea and coffee with milk – biscuits, jam, and sugar. The dry ration includes water purification tablets and wet wipes.
ISRAEL
Chicken and beef meatballs with rice, beans in tomato sauce, tuna in oil – main dishes. There is also something for vegetarians: stuffed grape leaves with rice, rice with peas, corn, olives, peanuts. For dessert – various candied fruits, halva, and chocolate dessert.
FRANCE
The dry ration of Europe's main gourmets cannot be primitive. It includes: tortellini with beef, oriental salad, salmon pâté, canned soup, dairy dessert, savory and sweet biscuits, marmalade and chocolate, nougat and muesli, energy bar, tea, coffee, and chocolate drink.
SWEDEN
Swedish soldiers breakfast on yogurt with cereal. For lunch – chicken curry with rice, and for dinner – meatballs with pasta (or vice versa). For dessert – chocolate cake, oat cookies or, for those who despise sweets, salted nuts. It can be washed down with an isotonic drink flavored with exotic fruits, coffee, or chocolate.
TANZANIA
Soldiers of Tanzania eat stewed chicken, rice, and oatmeal in the field, and for dessert – cookies. Actually, that's all, but the choice of drinks is large: orange and mango juice, coffee, and tea.
THAILAND
Everything is Asian exquisite and simple: fish soup, jasmine rice, beef with chili and garlic, dried fruits. Oh yes, and a plastic spoon.
“Army rations remind us that cultures of different peoples can be similar, but will never become identical. K-Ration sets show that even in extreme situations, people do not forget the traditions of their country,” believes the author of the exhibition.
