The idea of holding a jazz festival in a resort town on the Swiss Riviera belongs to Claude Nobs, who first realized it back in 1967. From its very first years, the Montreux Jazz Festival won worldwide recognition, making famous both its participants and the town itself on Lake Geneva. Unsurprisingly, Montreux remains a launching pad for many aspiring musicians today.
The creator and permanent director of the Montreux Jazz Festival (until 2013) Claude Nobs figured out how to attract more tourists to the quiet and peaceful town at the foot of the Alps.
The jazz festival made Montreux famous worldwide. Every year the format of this musical event changed: the dates became longer, the lineup more diverse, and the festival itself turned from a modest celebration into one of the loudest and most prestigious musical events in Europe.
In this regard, it is also worth mentioning that during the festival, the Montreux waterfront turns into one continuous fast-food restaurant. National cuisines of many countries are represented here (mostly Asian, of course – because Asians know how to cook delicious street food). Japanese, Indian, Thai, Chinese, and many other national stalls and tents attract thousands of vacationers with the aromas of their dishes. And payment here is made with the festival currency – jazz.
