Marrying a Foreigner: Gathering Documents

Apostille will help legalize your marriage even on exotic islands

For your marriage to a citizen of a foreign country to be legal, that is, to have legal force both in your country and in his homeland, you will need a package of documents, which, by the way, is not that large, but must be collected completely to avoid unnecessary troubles and red tape later.

Let us consider two cases: when the marriage is concluded in Ukraine, and when the marriage is concluded abroad.

1. Marriage in Ukraine.

To register a marriage between a Ukrainian woman and a foreigner, the groom must provide the following package of documents:

- a notarized translation of the foreign citizen's passport into Ukrainian (this can be done through a translation agency);

- immigration card of the foreign citizen;

- certificate of his marital status (either a divorce certificate or a death certificate of his ex-wife);

- certificate of residence.

All documents except the passport must have an apostille. This is a special form of document certification in accordance with the provisions of the Hague Convention. An apostille is a special stamp placed on official documents of a non-commercial nature, certifying the authenticity of the signature, the capacity in which the person signing the document acted, and, in some cases, the authenticity of the stamp or seal affixed to the document. The easiest way to handle this is to contact a translation agency, which will provide both notarization and apostille for you.

A Ukrainian bride in her country must provide her passport and a certificate of dissolution of a previous marriage, if such existed.

2. Marriage abroad.

In this case, the bride will have to gather the documents. They should include:

- certificate of marital status;

- birth certificate;

- passport of a citizen of Ukraine;

- divorce certificate, if you were previously married;

- death certificate of spouse, if you are a widow;

- certificate of no criminal record;

- certificate of residence.

All documents must be apostilled and legalized for that country. In addition, they must be translated into the language of the country where they are submitted (seek help from a translation agency – this will solve many of your problems). The documents also need to be notarized.

It should be remembered that in some foreign countries, states and cities, different customs and rules sometimes apply, and therefore the list of documents may be changed and expanded. Ask your fiancé to consult in advance at the place of future registration and find out exactly what documents you will need.

Yes, and don't forget to put an apostille on the marriage certificate so that it is valid not only in the country where the marriage was concluded.

Advice and love to you!
