Air passengers reported missing or damaged items after their baggage was inspected by agency employees. According to NEWSru, in early January the agency recommended that all air passengers not lock their suitcases so that inspectors would not have to break them open. At most airports, to avoid long queues, baggage is checked after it has been handed over by the passenger. The owners of the suitcases and bags are not present during this process.
According to agency representatives, 485 of the 6,700 complaints have already been satisfied. Passengers were paid a total of $38,800 from the treasury. The agency also admitted that it has not yet completed background checks on more than 22,000 employees hired after the September 11 attacks to inspect baggage at airports. Those found to have a criminal past are immediately dismissed. To date, 85 people have left the agency.
