The Galapagos amaze tourists with their unique fauna and flora

Based on a survey of its audience, the publication compiled a top list of the ten most attractive islands. Besides the Galapagos, the top three included the Indonesian island of Bali and the Republic of Maldives. They are followed by the Australian island of Tasmania and the Greek Santorini.

Sixth place went to Moorea (French Polynesia), while the Hawaiian islands of Maui and Kauai took seventh and eighth. Ninth place was taken by the Great Barrier Reef (Australia), and the ranking was rounded out by the Republic of Malta.

As The Daily Mail notes, the Galapagos attract tourists with the opportunity to see unique fauna and flora, such as giant tortoises, after which the islands are named (Spanish galápago — a type of water turtle). For the same reason, the islands are popular with divers. The Galapagos are known for being the site of naturalist Charles Darwin's research, which later became the impetus for his evolutionary theory of the origin of species.
