Mysterious Zanzibar

Friendly relations have developed between locals and guests of Zanzibar

Zanzibar is an archipelago, its capital is Stone Town. The main advantages of the resort are: Rich culture of the local people. Stunningly beautiful coastline. The purest water in the ocean. Diversity of underwater life.

Once upon a time, only romantic travelers came to Zanzibar; now luxurious hotels and inns line the coast, offering a wide range of services to visitors.

Language Features

Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, which lacks a single language. Each ethnic group uses its own dialects, and besides, representatives of ancient tribes live here – the Maasai, Ha, Chaga, and many others. Natives of Persia, Arabia, India, Congo, Somalia, and other countries have found a modest home in these lands. Europeans, Asians, and Americans come to taste the spirit of free life. The sacred language for all of Tanzania is Arabic.

A Bit of History

The state was created by the merger of two countries – Tanganyika, belonging to the mainland, and the island part – Zanzibar. The worldview of the local population is clearly reflected in the Swahili language, whose favorite phrase is "hakuna matata," which translates to "no problems." A measured life is evident in everything, so tourists from "business" America or Europe may be greatly surprised by the unusual way of life.

Religion, Rituals

The leading role in religious views belongs to Islam, but the clothing of the local population does not correspond to the required canons. The veil is replaced by an ordinary outfit – kanga (a cotton fabric that is wrapped around the body). The traditional color of clothing is bright; you rarely see a local dressed in gray or black. The exotic nature calls, and bright outfits must necessarily blend with it!

Maasai

The Maasai tribe, unlike the main part of the archipelago's inhabitants, follows completely different fashion trends. They like to wear clothes of red and blue in stripes and checks. The restraint of the locals' attire is fully compensated by an abundance of jewelry. Worldwide, it is the Maasai who are famous as a people ready to wear huge wire rings (they are put on girls' necks, making them elongated, which is considered very beautiful).

Another part of the body that the Maasai pay due attention to is the ears. When children reach the age of seven, they are pierced with a horn fragment, the hole is widened with wood, and over time, massive beads appear on the earlobes. Most likely, such traditions were created in ancient times so that the ethnic group would differ from other tribes by characteristic features.

On the one hand, locals resemble typical Africans; on the other, they resemble Arabs, but it often happens that they mix: in a crowd of locals mixed with tourists, you can find both a kanga and an Indian sari.

The archipelago has been connected by trade and other relations with other lands for many centuries, so friendly and benevolent relations have developed between locals and guests. As a result, a bright bouquet of an abundance of nationalities, traditions, and cultures, called Zanzibar, has been created.

Cuisine

In 1810, one ship brought cloves to the island, resulting in the creation of entire spice plantations. Many locals call this plant the king of the archipelago. In addition, locals grow ginger, nutmeg, and vanilla, which they successfully use themselves and export.

Local cuisine has not gained fame outside the island, but tourists say it is a real treasure not only in Africa but also throughout the Indian Ocean. The first impressions of a traveler who manages to taste local dishes become indescribably vivid.

Dishes are prepared from meat, seasoned with spices. All the exoticism of local cuisine can be tried in local eateries. For the first course, you can order bean soup in coconut milk. Snack food is bananas, which are not sweet. They are heat-treated and served as chips, puree, or as components of other dishes.

Loaves of bread are not found on the island, but you can taste delicious flatbreads. If you want exoticism and a break from everyday routine, Zanzibar will gladly welcome you.
