The main reasons and subject of sanctions remain armed conflicts and arms trade.
North Korea
Numerous sanctions have been imposed against North Korea. The international community is outraged by the human rights situation in the country and Pyongyang's development of its own nuclear program. The sanctions include a ban on all forms of aid, financial cooperation and trade.
Israel
The international community has not imposed sanctions against Israel, but in some Arab countries all transactions involving Israel are prohibited.
Iraq
Sanctions against Iraq include a ban on trade in arms and related materials, restrictions on trade in cultural property, and freezing of funds and economic resources.
Sudan
Sanctions against Sudan were imposed in 1997, when it was accused of attempting to destabilize the political situation in neighboring states. The US imposed economic, trade and financial sanctions against Sudan. After the events in Darfur in 2006, economic sanctions were intensified.
Syria
US and EU sanctions imposed against Syria are the most comprehensive and include a ban on trade in goods that could be used internally for repression, as well as a ban on trade in oil and petroleum products. Syria has been subject to sanctions for decades, the main reason being support for terrorist groups. Later bans on investment, financial activity and transportation were linked to repression against the country's citizens, the consequences of which in the form of a refugee crisis from Syria the international community is trying to resolve today.
Libya
Sanctions against Libya include a ban on trade in arms and related materials, as well as anything that could be used for internal repression. Authorities are trying to prevent illegal oil exports from Libya by inspecting ships and imposing restrictions on some of them. Funds and economic resources are frozen.
Russia
In response to Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, and in connection with the crisis in eastern Ukraine, the US and EU imposed numerous sanctions against Russia. They affect both individuals and large enterprises. The goal of the international community is to limit the activities of certain sectors of the Russian economy linked to the country's ruling elite.
Russia in turn banned imports of certain products from the EU, US and other countries.
Ukraine
International sanctions target high-ranking officials involved in the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine, as well as those connected to Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014.
Russia also imposed its own sanctions against Ukraine, mainly targeting food products.
Myanmar (Burma)
In 2013, some sanctions against the country were lifted after the authorities implemented political reforms, but the embargo on trade in arms and anything that could be used for internal repression remains.
