LAKE BALATON (Hungary)
The largest lake in Central Europe is located in western Hungary. The Balaton coast is the most important resort area of the country, with outlets of mineral and thermal springs. Residents of Budapest often come here for the weekend, as the distance to the capital is only about 120 kilometers; trains (including directly from the airport) go to the lake, and it is easy to get there by car. The northern shore is steeper and ideal for sports enthusiasts, while the gentle southern shore is for those who want to lounge and swim.
Choosing a hotel requires careful consideration: there are many buildings from the Soviet era on the shores of the lake, with rooms that are not cheap and clearly not worth the money. Nevertheless, there are pleasant exceptions. The high season is July and August. Balaton offers ample opportunities for those who like to explore the surroundings: you can go on excursions to small coastal towns and the nearby thermal lake Heviz, or get behind the wheel and visit neighboring countries – the journey to Vienna, Bratislava, and Zagreb takes a few hours. Party lovers will not go wrong if they stay in the Balaton town of Siofok, known for its vibrant nightlife.
LAKE CONSTANCE (Austria, Germany, Switzerland)
Lake Constance, also known as Bodensee, is located on the border of Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. Its depth reaches 254 meters, and in area it is second in Europe only to Balaton and Lake Geneva. Lake Constance is a paradise for sailing enthusiasts. In July and August, the Bregenz Opera Festival takes place in one of the lakeside towns, Bregenz. The flora and fauna of Lake Constance will captivate those who like to post vacation photos on social media.
LAKE BLED (Slovenia)
Lake Bled is located in the Julian Alps, 45 kilometers northwest of the capital Ljubljana. Since the 19th century, a balneological resort has existed on its shores. In July and August, the lake warms up to 25 degrees Celsius. In the middle of Lake Bled there is a small island with a church and significant early medieval excavations. Traditional wooden boats called "pletna" are offered for visiting the island.
Above Bled, on a steep cliff, is Bled Castle. Another attraction is Grimsce Castle. There are many hotels by the lake, mostly of good quality. If you get bored of the lake, you can get in the car and head to the Adriatic coast of Slovenia.
LAKE ANNECY (France)
The French lake, located in the Alps (Haute-Savoie), is most conveniently reached from Geneva, which is only 30 kilometers away. This is a very picturesque place, ideal for active holidaymakers. There are sailing yachts, kayaking, water skiing, and lakeside cafes and restaurants. In August, a significant part of Paris flees here. The last summer month is especially lively on the lake: parties, fireworks, and other "action".
LAKE GARDA (Italy)
The largest lake in Italy is located near the southern foothills of the Alps. The easiest way to get there is from Verona airport. While relaxing on Garda, it is convenient to take excursions to Venice and Milan. But maybe you won't want to go far.
The resorts here are world-class, and life is bustling not only during the high summer season. First, there are thermal springs where you can swim in warm water even in December. Additionally, Garda is a mecca for windsurfing. Families with children will also find things to do: the lake has Italy's largest amusement park, Gardaland, the Seaworld aquarium, Canevaworld water park, and the Movieland entertainment center.
LAKE COMO (Italy)
George Clooney wouldn't buy a villa in a bad place. Over the years, Mussolini, Stendhal, Goethe, and Nabokov have vacationed here. Como is Italy's third largest lake (47 kilometers long, up to four kilometers wide) and one of the deepest in Europe (up to 410 meters). It is located 40 kilometers north of Milan. The lake shores are lined with luxurious villas and stylish hotels. This is not a budget vacation, but it will be memorable.
LAKE GENEVA (Switzerland)
Lake Geneva is located within the borders of Switzerland and France, second in size only to Balaton. The northern shore of the lake is the so-called Swiss Riviera, entirely built up with prestigious resorts. People come here in search of a quiet, respectable holiday (and a health one – there are many spa hotels). But young people are also welcome – the Lausanne area is more suitable for active recreation. The beaches leave something to be desired, but people come here not for them, but for the atmosphere. The grassy beaches are fully compensated by the incredibly clean air and how easily the heat is tolerated here.
LAKE OHRID (Macedonia)
The fact that Macedonia does not have access to the Adriatic should not discourage beach lovers. Here is Lake Ohrid, on the shores of which stands one of the most beautiful Balkan cities – ancient Ohrid. This is the deepest and oldest lake in the Balkans. The average water temperature in summer is about 21 degrees Celsius. Fans of sightseeing will never be bored. Accommodation prices are low, and those who appreciate quality and natural products will surely appreciate Balkan cuisine.
