According to Brussels' plan, in this case EU airlines would appear on the international aviation market not on behalf of their own country, but on behalf of the bloc. EU states are even recommended to abandon the term 'national carrier'.
If EU countries transfer powers to Brussels, in the coming years we should expect the conversion of existing bilateral contracts - between an EU country and a state outside the bloc - into a new format. The impetus for the reform was a decision by the European Court of Justice, which in November last year ruled that some bilateral aviation agreements between EU countries and the United States were discriminatory.
