Representatives of the CDU and CSU take the most radical approach to solving the problem of integration of foreigners. Brandenburg's Minister of the Interior Jörg Schönbohm demanded the introduction of special quotas on the number of citizens of non-German nationality in schools, kindergartens, and even entire city districts. According to the minister, the 'quota system' would allow foreigners to learn German faster and feel at home in the world around them.
Schönbohm is confident that foreigners will willingly leave their own 'ghetto' and move to another place if they are provided with 'more affordable housing.' The plans of the Brandenburg minister may well be implemented, as he is known for his decisive actions and speeches in favor of tightening immigration legislation.
Bavaria's Prime Minister Edmund Stoiber proposes to act with more legal methods, deciding to adopt the American experience. The politician considers it necessary for foreign residents of Germany, when obtaining a German passport, to take an oath on the country's Constitution. 'Everyone who wants to live with us must respect and recognize our values,' stressed Stoiber.
The Greens remain true to their unpredictability in the matter of integration. They openly demonstrate opposition and disagreement with the policy of their coalition partners, who through Franz Müntefering demanded loyalty from foreigners to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany. According to the leaders of the Greens, modern society 'has no freedom without cultural diversity.' They believe that the discussion on integration is currently being conducted in Germany 'amid the flame of intolerance and hostility towards foreigners.' Dialogue with Islam is necessary, but only 'on the basis of democracy and the rule of law,' emphasize the co-chairs of the Greens.
It seems, however, that even within the ranks of Joschka Fischer's own party, not everyone shares the views of the Greens' leaders Roth and Bütikofer. In any case, the leader of the parliamentary faction, Katrin Göring-Eckardt, recently demanded that foreigners, especially Muslims, live not by their own laws but by the laws of the country where they attend school, grow up, and raise their children. And let us add, where they also receive financial support from the state.
