Sea Containers: Types and Applications

A container is a rectangular box closed with a heavy double-leaf door. These structures are designed for intermodal transportation, mainly by rail and sea. They are also often used, for example, for storing items. Containers from Global Container Service allow transporting goods in bulk quantities, which is why they play such an important role in international import and export.

Individual types of containers differ in size, load capacity, roof opening clearance, and door opening. All these factors influence the use of different container types for various purposes.

General-purpose containers are used for transporting all general cargo. They are often used for transporting goods whose large weight does not allow them to be transported in significant quantities. Modifications of such containers also allow transporting bulk or liquid cargo. The tare weight of general-purpose containers ranges from 1.8 to 2.5 tons, and their average load capacity is 21.8 tons.

Tank containers are used for transporting liquid chemicals and potable liquids. The design of such containers is a tank placed in the frame of a standard 20-foot container with all equipment. It meets the requirements of the IMDG (International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code).

Tank containers are usually filled to at least 80% to avoid sharp fluctuations of their contents during transportation. Food products are transported only in containers marked "Only for potable liquids." The transportation of certain goods must comply with the requirements for the maritime transport of dangerous substances.

Refrigerated containers are used for transporting products that require constant temperature and humidity control. Suitable conditions for their transportation are possible thanks to walls filled with polyurethane foam and a floor made of aluminum T-shaped gratings. The containers maintain a constant temperature from about 25 to -25 degrees Celsius as long as the difference between the external and set temperature does not exceed 42 degrees for heating and 65 degrees for cooling.

Depending on the goods being transported, the type of container will also change. The container must be adapted to the cargo being transported to ensure trouble-free transportation of products to the facility. It is important to know that the goods must also be properly loaded into the container, otherwise the cargo may be damaged.
