Migration Queries

Multithousand fines for those found violating migration legislation, the FMS believes, will prove that hiring a foreigner without 'official' documents is extremely unprofitable. At the same time, the FMS does not forget that almost half of the migrants in Russia have fake documents, and continues to improve the system for verifying the legality of foreigners' stay. Recently, any employer who doubts a potential employee can check their documents online.

According to the FMS, since the beginning of the year, 4.7 million citizens have registered for migration, and 1.54 million work permits have been issued. Now almost anyone can check these one and a half million permits. The procedure has been reduced to a simple online request, whereas previously the employer had to request data about a foreigner wishing to get a job directly from the FMS. As FMS press secretary Konstantin Poltoranin said, the procedure for sending a request and receiving a response online is extremely simple. 'You need to go to the website, select a section, leave your email. Then you enter the work permit number of the person you want to check, and after a while an answer comes to the email address you specified,' Konstantin Poltoranin said.

As stated in the FMS, 'such access to the internal database should not result in the entire database being widely available after some time,' as often happens. 'You won't get any information on the website itself – the answer comes to your email,' Konstantin Poltoranin said. According to him, the employer can only get reference information: whether the potential employee has a legal work permit. 'The answer comes in the form of 'yes or no', no other information will be provided,' the FMS press secretary emphasized.
