The municipal program for the development of bicycle transport promotes a healthy lifestyle and aims to reduce the harm caused to the environment by the use of gasoline cars. According to city authorities' plans, by the end of 2015, half of the residents will be using bicycles. This is despite the fact that currently just over a third (37%) of citizens use them regularly.
If this goal is achieved, then in just a few years Copenhagen will become the most bicycle-friendly city in the world, moving up in the corresponding ranking from second to first place. Today, this honorable title belongs to Amsterdam, where 40% of the population uses bicycles.
