Throughout 2009, cultural events will be held in Vilnius. In February, baroque ice buildings will grow on the city streets, in May there will be a street music day, in June – an opera festival and an exhibition of works by the famous Lithuanian artist M.K. Čiurlionis. As Travel.ru notes, this is only a small part of the planned events. The global task of the organizers is to turn the capital of Lithuania into a city of arts, where all styles, genres and directions of human creativity would unite.
The other European Capital of Culture in 2009 will be the Austrian city of Linz. This year, the honorary title is held by British Liverpool and Norwegian Stavanger.
