The Czech Senate has proposed repealing the "dry law" for cyclists
Senators propose lifting the ban only for cycling on bike paths and low-traffic third-class roads. In their opinion, such an amount of alcohol in the blood cannot seriously affect a person's ability to ride a bicycle – 0.5 per mille for an adult male (weighing about 80 kg) roughly corresponds to a liter of light beer or 200 ml of wine.
The initiators of the innovation recalled that neighboring Austria has a limit of 0.8 per mille, which creates an absurd situation: on Austrian territory, the law allows a cyclist to drink, but as soon as he crosses the Czech border, he immediately becomes a criminal and risks a large fine.
Furthermore, the Senate is confident that the relaxation will help develop tourism and the economy of Moravia. It is known for its picturesque cycling routes that pass through vineyards and wineries.
Now the document must be considered by the lower house of parliament. Previously, it has spoken out against lifting the ban and will most likely not support the initiative this time either. At the same time, as Vinegret.cz notes, deputies have made concessions for water tourists. They have been allowed to operate non-motorized vessels with the same 0.5 per mille in the blood.
