Prostitution has recently become a completely legal occupation in Germany
Only one in five "night butterflies" can boast a German passport. The total number of prostitutes with German citizenship in the country is only 6,200. Most women forced to sell their bodies come to Germany from less prosperous countries, such as Romania.
It is from this country that the vast majority of prostitutes come to Germany – 11,400, which as a percentage amounts to 35% of all representatives of the oldest profession legally offering their services on the German market and paying taxes on their income. About 3,200 women have Bulgarian citizenship. 2,400 officially registered prostitutes in Germany come from Hungary.
According to the statistical study, the largest number of firms providing intimate services are located in Bavaria (557), Baden-Württemberg (326) and North Rhine-Westphalia (209). At the same time, North Rhine-Westphalia leads in the number of sex industry workers (9,307 women). In second place is Bavaria (6,384), and in last place in the "top three" is Baden-Württemberg (3,658). Unexpectedly, the German capital Berlin has relatively few legally registered "body traders" – their number is 750 people.
It is worth noting that not all federal states have data on the number of officially registered enterprises providing sexual services available to the public.
Recall that prostitution is a completely legal occupation in Germany. Since July 1, 2017, the safety of prostitutes has been protected by law; Germany has a corresponding law on the protection of persons engaged in prostitution.
However, it should be borne in mind that the actual number of people forced to sell love for money may be significantly higher than reflected in the statistics, since far from all prostitutes work legally.
