According to an EU communiqué, 'dairy and meat products pose a threat to the health of animals raised in the EU. They can cause diseases such as avian flu or others dangerous to human health.' Therefore, starting May 1, 2009, chocolate, sandwiches, and other products containing milk or meat will have to be eaten or discarded before crossing the border.
The new rules make an exception only for the specified products weighing up to 10 kilograms from Croatia, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Iceland. Additionally, the rules do not apply to baby food and food needed for medical purposes if the load does not exceed 2 kilograms and is properly packaged. Passengers will also be allowed to carry up to 20 kilograms of fish and seafood.
The ban applies to both imported luggage and postal shipments.
