As reported by Radio Prague, asylum was granted in 191 cases. In 32 cases these were citizens of Belarus, in 31 – Russia, 19 – Ukraine, 17 – Iraq. For comparison, in 2006, 268 people received asylum in the Czech Republic. Meanwhile, the number of applications filed was 3,016.
According to statistics, Ukrainians most often request asylum in the Czech Republic. Over the past 18 years, more than 13 thousand applications have been filed by citizens of Ukraine. In second place are citizens of Russia (almost 10 thousand) and Romania (6 thousand). Since 1990, asylum has been granted to 135 Ukrainians, 367 citizens of Russia, and 474 Romanians.
It is expected that due to the Czech Republic's accession to the Schengen Area, the number of asylum seekers will decrease. The Czech Republic is surrounded by other Schengen states. And a foreigner who crosses the border of the Schengen Area must request asylum in the state that he visits first.
