The cabinet is expressing dissatisfaction with the policy of State Secretary Nebahat Albayrak and is demanding explanations from her regarding exactly how many refugees are expected in the Netherlands this year. According to preliminary forecasts, the Netherlands expects about 10,500 refugees in 2008. But if the emerging trend continues, there will be several thousand more asylum seekers in the country.
According to RUS.nl, many Dutch politicians have previously criticized the so-called categorical policy of Albayrak regarding Iraqis and Somalis. The much more lenient categorical policy in the Netherlands compared to other European countries means that people from certain regions automatically receive asylum. Currently, this applies to Iraqis, Somalis, and refugees from Iraq with non-traditional sexual orientation.
Representatives of various political parties believe that the Netherlands has become too attractive for refugees, and a unified European policy is needed that will allow better distribution of refugee flows across European countries.
