Impressionism enthusiasts will be interested in the Hague exhibition of Gustave Caillebotte, the "grey eminence" of French Impressionism who only gained recognition in the second half of the 20th century. London's Dulwich Picture Gallery is preparing an exhibition dedicated to the collaboration between Murillo and his patron Justino de Neve. As the organizers promise, the enfilade of the Dulwich Gallery will recreate the interior of a 17th-century Seville church for which many of Murillo's works were intended.
Antoine Watteau (1684-1721): The Music Lesson, February 8 – May 12, Brussels, Centre for Fine Arts. On February 8, the Brussels Centre for Fine Arts will open an exhibition organized jointly with the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lille, dedicated to the painting of French artist Antoine Watteau (1684–1721). "The Music Lesson" is the title of this thematic exhibition, which will feature over 100 paintings, drawings, and engravings by Watteau and his contemporaries, as well as musical instruments from the era. Plein Air: From Corot to van Gogh, February 5 – May 12, Madrid, Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza. A new exhibition at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, opening on February 5, will explore plein air painting. Plein air painting emerged from artists working outdoors, based on direct study and depiction of nature and people under natural lighting conditions. The exhibition will bring together about 100 paintings dating from 1780 to 1900, including works by Corot, Turner, Constable, Rousseau, Courbet, Van Gogh, and Cézanne. //museothyssen.org
The Pre-Raphaelites, February 17 – May 19, Washington, National Gallery of Art. Visitors to the National Gallery of Art in Washington from mid-February will see 130 paintings, drawings, sculptures, and decorative works created by the Pre-Raphaelites and their followers between 1848 and 1900. The main goals of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, as defined by Holman Hunt, were virtuosity of technique, direct study of nature, poetic realism, pure color, and moral purity of subjects. Alongside this major exhibition, the gallery will also hold an exhibition of Pre-Raphaelite book illustration.
