Famous Czech dish „vepřové koleno“
After visiting this country, you will be amazed at the size of the portions of the dishes that will be served to you in the restaurant. If, for example, in Russia you can choose a hearty meal of soup, main course and dessert, then in the Czech Republic you will have your fill of a simple side dish with meat.
Czech cuisine is very similar to traditional Slavic cuisine, with the difference that locals use more fat and salt, and prefer flour and sweet dishes. But when you try Czech cuisine for the first time, you don't pay attention to such little things because you get amazing pleasure from the wonderful range of flavors. Czechs like to wash down their meals with their own beer.
Great respect is shown here for soups. The famous "polevka" resembles a thick jelly or a thin mashed potato in consistency. The secret of its preparation lies in adding the right proportions of flour, semolina, potatoes and pureed vegetables. Meat, meatballs or soup set are added to it, as well as egg yolks and yeast fried in oil.
As a main course, Czechs get the opportunity to enjoy fried pork, served with stewed cabbage as a side dish. They also love trout, carp, duck, and goose.
The favorite Czech dish of locals and tourists is "koleno" – a baked piglet leg, poured with beer. It is served to visitors in a tray with sauce or on a suitable board, with horseradish and mustard.
No less interest among gourmets is caused by goulash. Czech Republic is famous for a great many goulashes – rabbit, pork, beef, liver, hunter's, village, assortment, Szeged, and others. Each one has a special approach. For example, beef goulash is seasoned with a delicious sauce of cumin, pepper, garlic, flour and tomato paste. This dish is served with knedlíky, which are boiled balls of unleavened, salted or sour dough. Knedlíky are also made from potatoes. There are also sweet knedlíky – in this case the dish resembles lazy vareniki, which are abundantly filled with fruit mixture.
As desserts, kolače, shortbread cookies, fragrant pancakes and puff pastries are especially popular.
No less interesting than the dishes is the design of the restaurants. Ceramic tiles or untreated brick trim create an amazing feeling of home comfort. And then it may seem to you that you never even left home.
