Fear of flying can be overcome

Summer holidays are ahead. Tour operators in Bulgaria are already holding summer promotions and discounts on air tickets to Burgas. It's time to buy a ticket. Let's not let inappropriate emotions spoil our vacation!

Flying is not scary

There is hardly a single person in the world who is not afraid of anything and does not experience anxiety. This is not natural for humans or animals. Fear helps us preserve life and health, avoid injuries and careless actions. It is a part of the self-preservation instinct. Is it good to be completely calm in complete darkness? Then many would have died in childhood.

Our anxieties are born with us, or maybe even earlier. In childhood, they especially bother a person. With the development of experience, the number of irrational emotions decreases, reason takes the place of fear. People learn to manage their instincts through analysis and making personal decisions: what is safe and what is not. But reason also invents its own anxieties, no less strong.

Expert opinion

Psychologists distinguish between natural fears and phobias. Phobias (the word 'phobos' translated from ancient Greek means fear) are called obsessive states that are inadequate to the situation. They are characterized by various emotional and somatic manifestations. Psychologists distinguish many phobias. The fear of flying in people is called aerophobia.

What lies behind the fear of air travel?

What is called the fear of air travel has a different nature depending on the person. To understand yourself, try to draw your fear. Show the drawing to your loved ones so that they can help you describe and understand it.

Often it is simply a fear of death. Then you will be convinced by information that airplanes are the safest mode of transport, and turbulence is a normal and safe phenomenon during air travel.

Often behind this problem is difficulty trusting someone with your life (mechanics, dispatchers, pilots). This mistrust stems from the desire to control everything yourself. In such a case, it is better to go to a psychologist, since this problem affects all aspects of your life.

But elementary self-control can also help. To begin with, learn to relax. Close your eyes and imagine yourself in some pleasant place. Breathe evenly, look at the pictures that come to your mind. This should be done at the exact moment when the overwhelming feeling of horror is about to overtake you.

There is another way. Relax and imagine that the plane is a huge big bird, similar to an ostrich. And it is not flying, but walking on its very long legs. Watch how this ostrich moves and what long legs it has. Then you will not only not be afraid to fly, but also have fun. Since all the clamps live inside the psyche, and we ourselves learn to manage it.

Have a nice summer vacation!
