Safes: Not Afraid Even at 1010 Degrees

Burglary resistance, fire resistance and price are among the most important characteristics of a safe

Appearance, ease of use, guarantees and service are important but by no means primary consumer qualities of a safe that should be paid attention to. The main characteristics are burglary resistance, fire resistance and price.

The Russian standard, close to European ones, is comparable in strictness to German standards. At the All-Russian Research Institute for Fire Protection, they claim that the main suppliers of imported safes intend to certify them for compliance with the new requirements. Thus, there is already a contract with TD PROMET for testing safes of German production. Meanwhile, a variety of standards from different countries reigns supreme on the market.

AIKO safes became the first imported safes to undergo fire resistance testing in Russia. According to the Japanese standard JIS, the product is 'roasted' for 2 hours, raising the temperature to 1010 degrees Celsius, while the temperature during a fire is usually about 800 degrees. The 'baked' fire-resistant safes have a far from shiny appearance—unlike the paper inside the safe, which did not even change color. At the maximum external temperature, the internal temperature did not reach 130 degrees, whereas paper ignition requires 170.

When buying a safe, you should pay attention to the certification standard. Ask the seller for this information, keeping in mind that safes certified to the VDMA24991 standard (Germany) best meet the new GOST. The least demanding is the Korean KS standard. If the safe does not have a certificate, you should refuse to purchase.

GOST also classifies safes for burglary resistance, which is expressed in conventional units Ec. The number Ec (in minutes) indicates how long it will take a professional equipped with special tools to gain partial or full access to the contents. In particular, in commercial banks, according to the requirements of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, safes of class 5 (180 and 270 Ec, respectively) must be used. Most companies with security will need a class 1 product (30 and 50 Ec), while large businesses are recommended class 3 (80 and 120 Ec).
