Scholarships introduced in the US for children of illegal immigrants studying in schools and universities
As reported by New Izvestia, the law affects a fairly large category of the population. According to the federal immigration agency, at least 12 million people live in the US without legal residency. The number of illegal immigrants in Illinois is in the tens, if not hundreds of thousands.
On the day the Senate of the General Assembly approved the Dream Act, a large demonstration was held in Chicago by people from countries from which thousands of illegal immigrants still constantly enter the US, primarily from Mexico. The demonstrators carried signs thanking the Illinois legislators and the author of the bill, the state's Governor Pat Quinn.
The fact is that families of illegal immigrants face serious financial problems paying for their children's education. Without an official work permit, it's hard to earn much. Paying scholarships to college and other higher education students will to some extent improve the financial condition of illegal families. At least, they will be less likely to take their children out of universities.
In addition, the law may also ease the situation of the illegal immigrants themselves. The Dream Act does not contain a provision banning the deportation of parents who are in America illegally but whose children are studying in schools or universities. However, it is possible that something similar will be adopted, as the US is discussing a new legislative reform.
This was colorfully expressed during the Chicago demonstration by the sheriff of one of Illinois's counties, Mark Curran. 'I am sure that deporting illegal immigrants whose children are studying in schools or higher education institutions contradicts God's opinion,' he said.
This statement was met with thunderous applause. His opinion was supported by another participant in the Chicago demonstration, Michael Madigan, speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives, who expressed hope that soon illegal immigrants in the US would be legalized.
