Self-priming centrifugal pumps – features and advantages of use

However, it is not that simple. The air lock that forms between the unit and the pumped substance prevents a conventional device from operating normally. Therefore, a special type called self-priming centrifugal pumps is used for transporting water from wells. Read more about this on the website Mir-nasosov.

Design features and operating principle

The main internal elements of a centrifugal pump are the impeller with blades, diffuser, and ejector. During rotation, the impeller draws liquid into the device, where under the action of centrifugal force, the discharge chamber is divided into two sections – low and high pressure. The liquid displaced by compression rushes into the rarefaction area, from where it is automatically pushed out through the valve. This is how a conventional centrifugal pump works.

A self-priming unit has one small but significant feature. It is equipped with a recirculation chamber. Air is sucked into the device, mixing with water pre-filled into the pump. Entering the recirculation chamber, the mixture is degassed. The air separates and exits through a special valve, while the water flows into the main discharge chamber. Then the usual water transport process described above occurs.

Main advantages

The ability to operate under conditions of lifting liquids from depth is the main and most valuable feature of self-priming centrifugal systems. In addition, they can handle viscous substances containing solid particles, as well as pump liquids containing obvious abrasives.

Areas of application

In addition to using self-priming pumping units in households for lifting water from wells, these devices are widely used in some areas of industry, including:

oil industry – pumping petroleum products;

household sector – providing water supply for suburban areas;

gardening – watering greenhouses, gardens, flower beds.

These are just some highlights revealing the capabilities of self-priming units. At the same time, these systems can be used on par with conventional centrifugal pumps, which means exceptional versatility of such devices.
