A Ukrainian woman who lives in Germany described a shortage of fresh food in stores after 16:00. According to her, even supermarkets open until 22:00 do not guarantee the opportunity to buy bread and vegetables in the evening.
The woman shared her observations on Threads under the handle illiomia. She explained that with a five-day workweek it is difficult to keep up with shopping: after work, the choice of the necessary products in the stores she knows is already limited.
Why shopping in Germany turns into a Saturday marathon

According to the author of the post, the problem is especially noticeable on Saturdays. During one trip to the supermarket, she could not find basic products, including fresh bread and vegetables. The shelves with promotional goods were also empty.
“The displays with promotional goods are swept clean as if after a hurricane. And it’s like this every Saturday! In the evening on weekdays the shelves are the same,” the Ukrainian woman noted.
The woman said that Saturdays are taken up with shopping, cleaning and other household chores. One of the two days off turns into a day of constant rushing, since most ordinary stores are closed on Sunday.
“Saturday becomes a marathon of ‘getting everything done’: visiting all the stores, cleaning and doing laundry, because you can’t on Sunday,” the woman shared.
At the same time, her post describes personal experience and does not indicate a general food shortage in Germany. And the claim about a ban on Sunday laundry requires clarification: the restrictions concern primarily noise that disturbs neighbors.
The peculiarities of everyday life in Germany include restrictions on Sunday trading. Therefore, it is often impossible to move ordinary grocery shopping to the second day off.
What rules apply in Germany on Sundays

Trading hours and exceptions are determined at the level of the federal states. For example, in Rhineland-Palatinate stores usually must remain closed on Sundays, but municipalities may permit trading on certain Sundays of the year.
Noise protection rules also apply. In particular, in Berlin on Sundays and public holidays it is prohibited to create noise that substantially disturbs the peace of those around. This concerns loud work, not any household activities.
There is no general ban on laundry on Sundays in Germany. Using a washing machine is permitted if the noise level remains within normal limits and does not create excessive inconvenience for neighbors.
Differences in store schedules and local rules affect the daily life of Ukrainians abroad. For illiomia, the main difficulty was combining a full workweek with limited time for shopping.
