The physician's AW performs the following functions.
1. With its help, patient medical histories are maintained, stored, and analyzed.
2. With its help, communication with other clinic staff is carried out.
3. With its help, each clinic employee quickly and at any time of day gains access to necessary information, reference data, etc.
As a rule, in outpatient clinics, each physician via the AW has access only to their own patients' medical histories; in a hospital, however, access to histories is open to all physicians. Certain information (both in the outpatient clinic and in the hospital) from the physician's AW is obtained by other staff: nurses learn treatment prescriptions for each specific patient, requests for tests and laboratory studies are sent to laboratories and diagnostic departments.
