"Officers detained a couple from Berlin who were brewing coffee on the embankment of the Grand Canal near the Rialto Bridge, one of the most visited tourist attractions in the city," the statement said.
The attempt to have a romantic breakfast cost the man 650 euros and the woman 300 euros. The Germans were also asked to leave the city.
"We must respect Venice. Those ill-mannered people who come here and do as they please must understand that the police will catch them, punish them, and expel them," said Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro.
In May 2019, the city council adopted a new regulation on rules of conduct in the city. In particular, they prohibit the use of flammable substances in public places.
"From now on, we will also report the personal data of tourists subject to expulsion to the embassies and consulates of their countries. Our city will always be open to all well-behaved guests, but at the same time we will be uncompromising towards those who violate the rules of conduct in Venice," Brugnaro added.
