Vacation: Protect Ourselves. Our First Aid Kit

On the beach, you need to be especially careful with the sun, which you were so eager to get to when going on vacation.

Sunbathing is beneficial in moderation. However, sometimes it happens, for example, during vacation in Lazarevskoye, that the skin gets sunburned in a couple of hours. Therefore, be sure to stock up on sunscreen with a protection factor of at least 20. Redness and itching of the skin can be relieved by a cool bath, as well as a tablet of paracetamol or analgin if there is pain.

If a bath is not possible, there is a simple way to relieve itching. Spray the burned area with facial thermal water, apply gel with aloe or body milk. In addition, you should drink more fluids to replenish the body's water loss. However, do not lean on fizzy and highly carbonated drinks – they tend to leach micronutrients from the body, as a result of which you want to drink more and more.

Dizziness, slight nausea, or "darkening" in the eyes are symptoms of overheating. Overheating occurs due to severe loss of water and salts by the body, as a result of which the body cannot cope with heat distribution. In this case, you need to immediately move to the shade, lie down, drink still mineral water, or slightly salted water. Timely measures to eliminate overheating prevent heat stroke, which disrupts the body's thermoregulation process and in some cases can be fatal.

Our skin becomes especially sensitive in the heat, so redness, sometimes a rash, may appear if the sebaceous glands are blocked by cosmetics. Relief from this condition will be simple lightweight cotton clothing. If the itching is very bothersome, you should take antihistamines or use special lotions or gels with antihistamine properties. If the itching or rash is caused by an allergic reaction to UV radiation, you should use sunscreen with a protection factor of 30 or higher, as well as wear as much covered clothing and a head covering as possible.

Wherever you vacation, a common problem for anyone is diarrhea, which occurs due to differences in the chemical composition of water, food, or, most likely, has an infectious nature. In this case, you should protect yourself by using bottled water for drinking, avoiding any fruit or vegetable salads (except those you prepared yourself), as well as meat or fish dishes (preferably see how well these dishes are cooked). The fact is that our body is not adapted to new bacteria and microorganisms that enter our stomach with food. Therefore, despite tempting offers to try this or that delicacy at the market, it is better to refuse.

In countries with satisfactory hygienic conditions, you should avoid drinking strong alcoholic beverages with ice. The fact is that E. coli can survive low temperatures for 2-8 days while in ice cubes, after which it dies. For your information, a self-respecting restaurant or bar does not store ice for cocktails for more than 48 hours.

If diarrhea does occur, immediately replenish the body's fluid loss with rehydron or salt and sugar solutions (5-8 g of each product per 250 ml of water). For adults, antidiarrheal drugs (imodium), probiotics (bifiform, narine), or antacids (smecta) are suitable.

Quite often during holidays in hot countries, food poisoning occurs. This is due both to unfamiliar foods and the heat, which causes rapid development of microorganisms. The following recommendations will help prevent food poisoning: do not consume fresh milk or dairy products; use separate knives for cutting meat and other products; after handling meat or fish, wash your hands with soap; if you cook meat yourself, make sure it is well cooked. If symptoms of food poisoning do appear, you should drink more water before the doctor arrives and act according to the case of diarrhea.

A flight on an airplane can long discourage any kind of vacation if you get motion sickness. Therefore, be sure to include a motion sickness medication in your first aid kit, which is taken 1-1.5 hours before boarding. Takeoff is usually accompanied by ear popping. A few candies taken on the trip will help. Swallowing reduces the load on the ear canal. The air in the cabin is usually very dry, so it's a good idea to use moisturizing cream for face and hands, and drink at least 1 glass of still water per hour. If you use contact lenses, stock up on special moisturizing drops. It is better to avoid coffee and alcohol during the flight.

Long flights also carry the risk of circulatory problems because you have to sit in a seat the whole time. In this case, wear non-restrictive shoes and clothing, walk around the cabin more often or stretch your legs, and do a light massage to enhance blood and lymph flow in the body.

Any first aid kit should include a disinfectant for treating cuts, antiseptic wipes; insect repellent, gel or cream to relieve itching after insect bites; a thermometer, tweezers, and scissors; tablets of validol and valocordin – anything can happen. In addition, people with chronic diseases who take medication should bring a supply of these medications, and also not forget to get the necessary prescription from their doctor in such cases.
