Previously in Russia, all pipeline valves were manufactured for wood-fired heating boilers according to a single GOST. At any Soviet enterprise that manufactured plumbing equipment and components, production was organized on an assembly line. All plumbing fittings for any type of residential building were standard. In Europe, a clear classification of pipeline systems for water supply, sewerage, and engineering valves for bathrooms had long emerged.
The modern availability of imported plumbing has required clarity in the definition of all types of pipeline valves (shut-off, plumbing, shut-off and control) to avoid confusion. According to the pan-European standard, all engineering valves for houses and apartments are defined as 'valves of housing and communal systems'. It is assigned code 3, which is further divided into five sections.
The first section includes plumbing and everything related to it: fittings for bathrooms, shower cabins, other rooms intended for hygiene procedures, as well as flush tanks, water heating appliances. Also included here are shut-off valves, shut-off and control valves, mixers, devices with various types of control (electronic, thermostatic, mechanical).
The second section separately highlights plumbing for water supply and sewerage. These include ball valves, shut-off valves, drain cocks, butterfly valves and other gate valves. This section includes fittings for washing machines as a type of the most popular modern appliances.
The third section describes mechanisms for housing and communal systems. This includes fittings that provide air conditioning and heat supply along with temperature and pressure limiters, ventilation regulators, thermostatic valves.
In the fourth section of engineering valves according to the European classification, there are pipeline valves for gas supply – double-circuit electric boilers for apartments and residential houses. It unites all devices by which gas is delivered to the consumer: connecting elements, conical cocks, various shutters and gate valves.
A separate section is allocated for pipeline valves for agricultural purposes. These are various devices for garden equipment, sprinkler installations, sprayers, granaries and farms.
Currently, water supply fittings are especially in demand, which are of great importance for improving people's lives. For the manufacture of imported engineering equipment, materials such as brass, bronze, steel, less often plastics, and sometimes cast iron are used.
