When the final draft of the document was ready, it was once again thoroughly examined by experts from the Council of Europe, who expressed full satisfaction with the reflection of the criminal procedure foundations of Ukraine.
The adoption of the document by the Verkhovna Rada lasted all night from May 13 to 14, despite the fact that the first meeting on the re-examination of the new Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine dates back to the 10th of this month. Despite the length and complexity of the procedure, it cannot be said that time was wasted, as during this time more than 3,700 amendments were introduced to the draft code, each of which was evaluated and discussed by independent experts from Europe.
Only opposition representatives were dissatisfied with the new Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine, who stated that the document was adopted in violation of the current legislation of Ukraine. They not only consider it invalid but also express hope that the president of the country will refuse to sign it.
However, their expectations were dashed on May 14, as the president not only signed the final version of the new Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine but also expressed his assumption that after coming into force, it would take effect immediately.
Such 'haste' is not surprising at all, because at the moment many open questions have accumulated in Ukraine regarding liability for various criminally punishable acts. The topic of developing mechanisms for punishing those who break the law in the economic sphere is particularly acute.
However, the president disagrees with those who claim that the trend of constant increase in economic crime rates is characteristic only of Ukraine. This is a 'scourge' of many developed European states, so the Ukrainian side accepts the accusations only partially, expressing hope for bilateral cooperation that will help achieve all standards of European democracy and the most significant heights of development in this direction.
