And today, among historians, a legend is very widespread that the city was founded by three brothers and a sister. The name of the eldest brother – Kyi – served as the basis for the name of the city. All brothers – Kyi, Khoryv, and Shchek, as well as their sister Lybid – belonged to the tribe of Polans. Archaeologists claim that the Polans built the first quarters in Kyiv in the 880s.
But there is another version of the origin of this ancient city, according to which the city was founded by three Armenian brothers – Kuar, Meltey, and Khorevans. Less popular among historians is the so-called 'Khazar version'. According to it, Kyiv was founded by a Khazar vizier named Kuya, after whom the city was named.
But no matter what historians argue about, today Kyiv is a modern metropolis imbued with the spirit of ancient history. If you have bought plane tickets to Kyiv and your immediate plans include visiting this beautiful city, you might be amazed at how majestic and wonderful this city is.
Skipping a few historical moments from the history of this city, I still want to focus on the fact that in 882, according to historians, Kyiv was conquered by Prince Oleg. It was to Kyiv that Prince Oleg moved his main residence and created a new state – Kievan Rus'.
It should be added that Kyiv had completely different names among different peoples. For example, the ancient Byzantines called it Samvatas, and in ancient Jewish manuscripts this city was listed under the name Mankerman.
Yet for many centuries the city remained the true center of Rus', until the 12th century. Afterward, according to historians, Kyiv repeatedly passed from one prince to another, was the subject of wars and feuds among many princely families. And so it happened that from 1299 the see was moved to Moscow, and already in 1362 the Kyiv lands became part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. A fundamental moment in the city's history can be called the Pereyaslav Rada of 1654, after which Kyiv became part of the Russian state.
There was also the revolution of 1917, after which power in Kyiv changed many times, and the difficult years of the Great Patriotic War, after which Kyiv became a Hero City. And since December 1991, the city has become the first capital of a new independent state – Ukraine.
