Giorgio Morandi, June 7 – September 22, Brussels, Centre for Fine Arts. This exhibition will comprehensively explore the work of the renowned Italian artist Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964). One section of the exhibition will discuss the influence on Morandi's work of early Italian Renaissance artists – Giotto and Paolo Uccello, as well as French painters – Zurbarán, Chardin, Seurat, and Cézanne. The exhibition features over 100 works by Morandi in various techniques: oil paintings, drawings, etchings, and watercolors, gathered from many museums around the world. The influence of Morandi on contemporary painting will be discussed in the final part of the exhibition, where a unique dialogue will take place between two artists – Morandi and contemporary Belgian artist Luc Tuymans.
"Vermeer and Music", June 26 – September 8, London, National Gallery. A new thematic exhibition dedicated to 17th-century music and Dutch "Golden Age" painting. The centerpiece will be three paintings by Jan Vermeer van Delft – "Young Woman Standing at a Virginal", "Young Woman Seated at a Virginal" from the museum's own collection, and "The Guitar Player" from Kenwood House, temporarily closed for renovation.
In addition to Vermeer's paintings, visitors will see genre scenes depicting musical concerts and chamber music lessons by such splendid Dutch painters as Jan Steen, Gabriel Metsu, Gerard ter Borch, Pieter de Hooch, as well as authentic musical instruments from that era (spinet, guitars, lutes). Live 17th-century music performed by the Academy of Ancient Music ensemble will be heard in the exhibition halls on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Tickets for these musical sessions must be booked in advance.
Pissarro, June 4 – September 15, Madrid, Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. A monographic exhibition of French Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) will be shown in Barcelona after Madrid. Pissarro is a key figure in the development of Impressionist painting (he participated in all eight exhibitions from 1874 to 1886), but he has remained in the shadow of more famous and loudly acclaimed Impressionist artists.
Bringing the artist's painting out of the shadows and proving that his works have fundamental merits, a "quiet genius", is the main task of the curators of this exhibition. About 70 of the artist's works will be arranged in chronological order, but the exhibition will be structured geographically: rural landscapes from Pontoise, Éragny, Louveciennes; cityscapes of Paris, London, Rouen, Dieppe, Le Havre. This will be like a pictorial tour of the places where Camille Pissarro lived and worked.
