On board - like in a restaurant

The new service will be called “Onboard Cafe,” and the menu will include a pastry, yogurt, fruit, and a bottle of mineral water for breakfast, and a sandwich or chicken salad for lunch. “This is dictated by common sense,” Sherry Hendry, vice president of flight services at US Airways, told journalists. “This step was taken for the sake of passengers; it will allow them to choose from the onboard menu.”

According to Stephen Egli, a representative of Sky Chiefs, a company specializing in food supplies for airlines, “food on board airplanes used to be an object of mockery from passengers, but now the public has drastically changed its opinion about the quality of meals offered in flight for money.” Currently, food is handled not by the airline itself, but by the specialized restaurant chain Einstein Bros.

It turned out that most Americans are happy to pay money to eat properly on board an airplane. Many American airlines have been experimenting with introducing paid meals since the beginning of the year – this allows not only improving service but also saving considerably. United Airlines and Northwest Airlines have already cut the “food rations” offered for free. Their customers are given questionnaires and asked to choose which food they would prefer.
