Using a mobile phone abroad, traditionally causing a violent surge of emotions when viewing the bill from the telephone company, no longer hits the wallet as harshly as a few years ago. But the legislative price reduction is still pleasant: a minute of conversation with Germany from any EU country, as well as Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, now cannot cost more than 46.41 cents (all prices with VAT). As 'Russkaya Germaniya' notes, previously the cost per minute was limited to 51.17 cents. Incoming calls should cost no more than 17.85 cents (previously – 22.61 cents).
There are no changes in the prices for sending text messages – within the EU they are already low. SMS from abroad costs no more than 13.09 cents, which is significantly lower than the widespread German tariff of '19 cents per message'.
Finally, mobile Internet expenses will become predictable. Using the Internet from a mobile phone abroad threatens huge bills – for example, a rumor circulated widely that the editor-in-chief of Bild newspaper Kai Diekmann was charged 42 thousand euros for publishing numerous photos and videos from Morocco on his own blog.
The prominent media figure's bill was paid by the publication's editorial office, and in order not to tempt ordinary users, telephone companies are obliged from July 1 to automatically cut off Internet access from a phone abroad if the cost of services already provided exceeds 59.50 euros, and to inform the client in advance via SMS that they are approaching the disconnection threshold.
It should be remembered that all the indicated figures apply only to EU member states: for example, frequent calls home from Turkey or Switzerland may still negatively affect the wallet of a tourist from Germany.
