Crime among refugees in Germany fell sharply
As reported by Deutsche Welle, this is stated in a report by the German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), which was published by the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung and the television channel NDR. The published statistics refer to people who have applied for asylum in Germany, have already received refugee status, or are in the country illegally.
In total, over the three quarters of the outgoing year, more than 214,000 various crimes were recorded, which is several thousand more than for the entire 2015. At the same time, the report notes that in some cases the investigation has not yet been completed and suspicions may be dropped.
The majority of recorded crimes are minor offenses, the report notes. 17 percent of them are fare evasion, and about a quarter of crimes are theft or bodily harm. Mostly, these are clashes between migrants, and only 6 percent of cases are attacks on German citizens. Rapes or sexual assaults by migrants accounted for only 1.3 percent of the total number of crimes.
At the same time, natives of Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, who make up about two-thirds of all refugees, committed offenses or were suspects in only a third of cases. The percentage of criminals among migrants from the Balkans, the Maghreb countries, as well as from Gambia, Nigeria, Somalia and Georgia is significantly higher, given the relatively small share of natives from these states among the total number of refugees.
As of mid-November 2016, there were also 457 suspects with ties to terrorists in Germany. Investigations were initiated against 90 people, the BKA report says.
