According to calculations by the Mexican National Institute of Statistics, Geography and Informatics (INEGI), from August 2006 to August 2007, 455 thousand Mexicans left the country legally or illegally, and for the same period in 2007-2008, that number dropped to 204 thousand people. In addition, the number of those wishing to leave the country in the future has significantly decreased.
At the same time, the number of families receiving financial assistance from relatives working abroad is gradually decreasing - from 1.41 million in 2005 to 1.16 million in 2008, as well as the amount of that assistance.
As reported by Lenta.ru, the main reasons for these processes are the economic crisis and the reduction of jobs for migrant workers from Mexico, as well as the efforts of US authorities to combat illegal immigration.
