This party believes that those guilty of murder, rape, drug trafficking, or human trafficking should be automatically deported from the country. According to exit polls, 53% supported the proposal and 47% rejected it.<\/p>
The SVP claims that foreigners are responsible for half of the crimes committed in the country, even though one-fifth of the population of the 7.7 million country are foreigners. A deported person will be banned from returning to Switzerland for a period of 5 to 20 years. It is expected that after the approval of this initiative, the number of foreigners expelled from the country per year will rise from the current 400 to 1,500.<\/p>
The Swiss Federal Department of Justice and Police warned that changing the constitution regarding the expulsion procedure for foreigners could conflict with the country's obligations in the field of human rights protection and could cause friction with Brussels.<\/p>
Meanwhile, it became known that the Helsinki social services department will send 40 Roma back to their homeland in Romania. 'The agreement on the dispatch was reached at a meeting of social workers with Roma who engage in begging in Helsinki,' reported the portal of Finland's largest newspaper, 'Helsingin Sanomat'. The city hall will compensate each returnee 25 euros for the ferry to Tallinn and will additionally pay 300 euros for gasoline for each car in which the Roma will continue their journey.<\/p>
'We talked to them and came to an understanding that it would be more reasonable for them to return to the country they came from,' said Jarmo Räihä, a leading specialist at the social services department. The formal reasons for the expulsion were the cold weather in Finland and a recent fire in the port of Kalasatama, where homeless Roma were sleeping. 'The authorities have now banned people from staying indoors and outdoors for safety reasons,' noted Jarmo Räihä.<\/p>
