As Lenta.ru notes, the Louvre holds the leadership position among the world's most visited attractions for the second year in a row. Last year it also took first place according to studies conducted by the Tourist Office of Paris.
In second place in the Art Newspaper ranking was the British Museum, which was visited by 5.93 million people over the past year. Third place went to the National Gallery in Washington (4.96 million visitors), fourth to the Tate Modern in London (4.95 million), fifth to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (4.82 million). In sixth place were the Vatican Museums (4.44 million).
The most visited exhibitions of 2008 included "Treasures from the Sesoin Temple," which attracted nearly 18,000 visitors per day, and "Treasures from the Yakushi-ji Temple" with 12,700 people per day. Both exhibitions were held in Japan.
