According to Canadian experts, all professions related to health care (therapists, dentists, nurses, various technicians and assistants) promise quick employment and decent earnings in the Land of the Maple Leaf. From the list of professions compiled by jobfutures analysts according to the parameters “average hourly pay”, “unemployment rate” and “outlook for 2007”, in the “health care” block, of the 23 positions listed in the table, only six are rated “satisfactory”. Therapists have the lowest unemployment rate – 0.3%, while registration staff have the highest (2.4%).
The French national employment agency (Ares) notes that in 2004, as in 2003, employers hired over 7,000 additional nurses and social workers.
People’s growing desire to travel is actively boosting the tourism and hotel industry. According to the World Tourism Organization, the hospitality industry generates 4% of global GDP and creates 3% of jobs. Taking into account the industry’s indirect impact on the world economy, these figures rise to 11% and 8%, respectively.
According to experts at the World Confederation of Labour (International Labour Organization), by 2010 at least 251.6 million people will be employed in the hospitality industry. Therefore, every year this sector of the economy requires more motivated personnel capable of interacting with different people at a highly professional level. The development of modern technology has demanded new skills and knowledge from specialists employed in this sector, and has also created new, previously non-existent job positions.
For a hotel to be competitive today, it needs not only well-trained front desk staff, maids, and cooks, but also competent managers, financial analysts, cash flow specialists, and quality inspectors. And while training one or another service staff member, depending on the position, takes 10–12 weeks, the path to the top of the managerial elite will take more than one year after graduating from university. Despite this, there are currently excellent opportunities for ambitious young people who want to make a career in the hospitality industry, regardless of the country of study. The fact is that a huge number of people working in this field do not have the necessary education.
Thus, according to the same World Confederation of Labour, over 60% of personnel working in the hotel and tourism industry in Germany have not undergone formal training. In Austria this percentage is 50. In Canada, every third person employed in this sector has only completed secondary school. Therefore, the prospects for young ambitious professionals associated with this profession are quite significant.
No human activity will be effective without qualified management. Therefore, the demand for managers and other business services specialists, which include accounting, finance, auditing, consulting, and secretarial work, does not decline. For example, in the United Kingdom, according to the Institute for Employment Research at the University of Warwick, in business related to banking and insurance, company management, auditing and consulting, and information technology, more than a million positions will appear in the next five years.
And in New Zealand, according to data from a government group of the Ministry of Labour, only 80% of vacancies in business are filled.
A rather paradoxical situation with qualified managers has developed in Germany. Despite the fact that over the past 15 years German universities have doubled the output of future managers, the country still needs highly qualified managers. According to forecasts by the Nuremberg Institute for Labour Market and Professional Qualification, by 2010, for every existing thousand jobs in management, an additional 420 places will appear, and in consulting this figure will almost double.
In conclusion, it is worth mentioning disciplines without which it has already become impossible to live in today’s society of total informatization. These are various computer disciplines and information technologies. Despite the fact that labor markets have seen some decline in demand for computer specialists due to excessively high expectations from dot-com companies, these professions will continue to be in demand. Modern business cannot survive without representatives of these professions – it is not without reason that they say: he who has information has power.
