Tiles are an excellent roofing material for substantial buildings
Made from clay, tiles withstand all the vicissitudes that a roof covering endures, whether they be precipitation, direct sunlight, or sharp temperature changes. However, this roofing material is made not only from fired clay (ceramic tiles), but also from thermoplastic composite, cement-sand mortar (cement-sand tiles), or lime-sand mortar with autoclave treatment (silicate tiles).
Currently, this material with an ancient history is produced using improved technology, which further enhances its reliability and durability. The service life of modern high-quality tiles is roughly about a century, but the manufacturer's warranty on this material is significantly shorter – from twenty to thirty years. Tile repairs are carried out by replacing damaged roofing elements. The material has high fire resistance and, more importantly, is environmentally friendly.
From an architectural point of view, ceramic tiles are attractive because they can be used even on roofs of complex shapes, which are now characteristic of many medium and large country house projects. As for the color range, the natural color of tiles varies from red to yellow and gray. If necessary, the color palette can be expanded by using tiles with artificial color obtained by applying a layer of colored glaze or engobe.
It should be noted that tiles have only one serious drawback – their rather large weight. However, the thick walls of a substantial country house will hold it without any problem, and a light and thin roof on such a house would still look disproportionate.
