As of today, there are thirteen competitive international film festivals of feature films accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF). Despite this, these film festivals vary significantly in their degree of fame. Some of them, such as the Cannes Film Festival, for example, are known almost worldwide. Others, for instance, the Cairo and Montreal film festivals, are more regional in status and scope, that is, something between national and international film festivals.
In addition, there are five international film festivals of documentary and short films, as well as six non-competitive film festivals of feature films accredited by FIAPF. However, the film festivals listed in this paragraph solely for the sake of accuracy and to provide a better understanding of the scale of the phenomenon will not be considered further in our review as phenomena of a lower order than competitive international feature film festivals.
Films presented at international film festivals must not have been previously publicly shown anywhere, which forces directors to choose a suitable venue for presenting their creations.
