As reported by CBC News, under the experimental program called "The Global Skills Strategy," in the first two and a half months of its operation, 1,600 highly skilled high-tech specialists arrived in Canada.
Canada's Immigration Department launched the two-year project in June. Its goal is to help companies that urgently needed talented specialists to expand their business.
The "Global Skills Strategy" program reduces the time foreign workers wait for a work permit. Decisions are made within two weeks, rather than many months. The program also facilitates entry for their immediate family members.
To date, two thousand people have already used this project. It appears that many applicants choosing between Canada and the US are attracted by the country's political climate, immigration authorities note. Over the past decade, there has been an overall increase in immigration to the technology sector. According to data provided by CBC, this trend will continue.
Last year, 8,785 tech workers immigrated to Canada. In the first eight months of 2017, their number was 6,940 people – almost 80 percent of the total for the previous year, Russianweek.ca reports.
