How to Cook Rice for Rolls

Clients of the food delivery service yaposhka.kh.ua often wonder: why are their yaposhka rolls so tasty? The secret is simple: it is important not only to choose the right rice but also to cook it properly. The grain is the base of the dish, so it must be cooked according to all the rules.

Choosing Rice

You have probably seen sushi rice on store shelves. Its sale can be called a small marketing trick: the rice really must be of a certain type, but there is no need to buy special sushi rice. Rather, its availability helps simplify the selection process. Instead of studying the labels on packages, the buyer can simply put sushi rice in the basket.

The roll should ultimately be dense, so it requires sticky rice. Experts advise preferring varieties with a high starch content. Such rice does not lose its shape during cooking and sticks well.

To achieve the desired plasticity of the grain, choose either special sushi rice or non-parboiled rice with round grains.

Proper Washing of Rice

As in life, balance is important in making rolls. On the one hand, the rice should not be too crumbly, otherwise the rolls will be difficult to form. On the other hand, rice porridge is not an optimal option for making sushi. It simply cannot be wrapped in nori.

How to avoid both extremes? By choosing the right type of grain, you will not get crumbly rice after cooking. However, the high starch content in sushi rice must be balanced. This is exactly why washing is required.

Rice should be washed as follows: Pour it into a saucepan or other large container; Add cold water; Clean the rice of debris and floating grains; Drain the cloudy water and add new water.

The last step should be repeated until the water in the container with rice becomes completely clear.

If the rice is properly washed, it will not become covered with sticky starch during cooking and will retain sufficient elasticity.

How to Properly Cook Rice

The Japanese have long realized that such a responsible process as cooking rice for sushi is best left to machines. If you do not have a rice cooker at home, you will need a saucepan with a transparent lid and attentiveness.

Rice should be cooked in a minimal amount of water. Specific recommendations for the ratio of liquid to grain are pointless, because you also have to consider the volume of the saucepan in which the rice will be cooked. However, there is a fairly universal rule that allows you not to pour too much water.

Important! Pour the rice into the saucepan and add enough water so that it covers the grain by 1-1.5 cm.

Rice for sushi must be cooked as follows:

Place the saucepan over maximum heat so that the water quickly comes to a boil;

After boiling, reduce the heat to minimum;

Cook the rice until 90% done. This usually takes 10-15 minutes. The appearance of the grain will help determine its degree of readiness: if the rice has lost its original shape, the heat can be turned off;

After cooking, turn off the heat and leave the rice in the water for another 5 minutes.

Important! During the cooking process, do not lift the lid of the saucepan. To be able to monitor the water temperature and the degree of readiness of the grain, choose a saucepan with a transparent glass lid.

Cooking rice for sushi requires not only following the rules but also some practice. If you did not succeed the first time, do not be upset and order delicious rolls on the website https://www.yaposhka.kh.ua/. And next time you will surely be able to make sushi yourself.
