Foundation drainage solves the problem of excessive soil moisture
As a result of exposure to various temperatures on wet soil, deformation may occur, which in turn affects the quality of the foundation. Even small soil movements can lead to the destruction of the house's base. In addition, increased soil moisture inevitably leads to dampness in both basement (ground floor) rooms and the entire house. This results in mold and fungal deposits, especially dangerous for wooden houses.
Foundation drainage will help solve the problem of excessive soil moisture. Drainage can be closed or open type. Open drainage systems are a network of small open channels that connect into a single drain into a sewer, well, or river (pond). They are suitable for fairly large plots of land and do not require the purchase of special equipment.
For foundation drainage, a closed type is more suitable, which is a branched system of channels covered with soil. Drainage pipes are used as channels. At the start of closed drainage construction, trenches are dug with a slope to divert water in the required direction. A sand cushion is laid at the bottom of the trench and covered with waterproofing (geotextile), over which drainage pipes will be laid. It is best to equip drainage systems with plastic pipes, as they are environmentally friendly and most affordable. Plastic is also used for making joints and turning elements.
After laying the pipe system, the trench is covered with soil. The depth of the trench should not be less than the depth of the foundation. When installing the drainage system, it is necessary to correctly select a filter, the type of which depends on the soil composition. Clay soils require the installation of a coarse-mesh filter, while for soils poor in clay, a fine-mesh filter is suitable.
The closed drainage system works as follows. Along almost the entire length of the pipe, there are holes through which water seeps from the ground. Excess water flows through the pipes into a sewer or other place intended for wastewater. Often, a closed system is combined with an open drainage, which takes on the volume of rainwater runoff.
