Currently, this art has many followers. Representatives of various subcultures (mostly young people) try to express their ideology, emphasize individuality, or simply decorate their body with a design they like—colorful or made only with black ink—through tattooing.
Thanks to the safety and relative painlessness of this procedure, more and more people are turning to tattoo artists. Fortunately, society is gradually leaving behind stereotypes that considered an expertly done tattoo and a prison-style 'blatnaya nakolka' as equivalent. This allows us to confidently assert that adorning one's body with tattoos has become one of the most important means of self-expression for modern youth.
The technical means used and the harmless, environmentally stable paints, as well as the widest selection of colors and motifs for tattoos, give every person the opportunity to find their own design, their own distinguishing mark. The image can serve simply as decoration, but it can also be filled with deep meaning.
In addition to their obvious decorative purpose, tattoos are also used to mask certain cosmetic defects—birthmarks, scars, keloids, and so on. A design can be applied to any part of the body, but to mask cosmetic defects of the facial skin or to give the face a fresh and well-groomed appearance for a long time, permanent makeup is used. The effect of using this type of tattooing typically lasts from two to seven years. Experienced specialists can carefully and painlessly correct the shape of eyebrows, lips, and eyelids, and such makeup does not require regular touch-ups.
Training in permanent makeup is a fairly responsible process, as it includes not just improving artistic skills and learning to operate a tattoo machine, but also demands precision, studying the basics of proper makeup application, and, importantly, being sensitive to the client's psychology. For example, a kind of 'convention' of masters brought together about 100 tattoo specialists from 26 countries in the German capital at the end of last year. Festival participants competed in categories such as 'largest tattoo,' 'craziest,' 'most realistic,' 'best ornament,' and so on in the same vein.
