The new law on citizenship rights will affect at least about 25,000 people.
As Swissinfo.ch notes, despite the "simplified" naturalization procedure, young foreigners are not exactly rushing to queue for the coveted red booklet.
"Selling off the homeland," "uncontrolled naturalization" – there has been no shortage of such exclamations, especially from the camp of the right-conservative Swiss People's Party (Schweizerische Volkspartei – SVP) in recent times. Nevertheless, in a recent referendum, the people approved by a majority of 60% the possibility for foreigners of the third generation to obtain passports in a simplified manner.
And now it has become clear: so far, only 185 people have applied to the authorities for passports in the simplified format, even though about 25,000 young people in Switzerland are entitled to such naturalization.
The conclusion is one: the new procedure for obtaining citizenship for this category of residents of the Confederation has by no means motivated them to drop everything and deal with their migration status.
