For the last few centuries, Munich's Platzl square has been a true Mecca, though people come here not for holy relics, ancient temples, or spiritual purification (although some may disagree with the last point). The Hofbräuhaus appeared in Munich at the beginning of the 17th century as a brewery that brewed beer primarily for the king, and therefore the quality of this drink was correspondingly high. Gradually, the Hofbräuhaus became increasingly popular among the local population, although the prices at this brewery seemed high to most of the German population at the time. The situation was "saved" by Ludwig I, who marked his reign with, among other things, a decree ordering all breweries to reduce the price of their product by at least twenty percent so that soldiers and workers could also enjoy this German drink.
Today, the Hofbräuhaus is an extremely popular restaurant. A hundred tables here are consistently reserved by regular customers, and this reservation usually lasts not for a specific period of time, but is essentially lifelong. And its term is measured not only by the life of the current customer – most likely his children or even grandchildren will eventually relax at the Hofbräuhaus. How is the popularity of this place measured? Not only by the number of chronically occupied tables, but also in liters of beer. Statistics unequivocally state that every minute, fifty liters of this hoppy drink are consumed under the arches of the historic building.
Many historical figures have sat at the Hofbräuhaus over a mug of beer, and some seriously claim that they enjoyed not only the beer but also engaging conversation with each other. Mozart was also a regular in his time, and today a hall on the second floor, decorated in retro style, is named after him. While relaxing here, be sure to raise a toast to the genius.
There are days when all three floors of the Hofbräuhaus are so crowded that there is nothing left to do but go down to the garden and continue drinking beer, but already in the shade of chestnut trees. Moreover, the local garden is truly spacious – it can accommodate up to four hundred people at a time. The classic way to visit the Hofbräuhaus is with a mug of beer, classic German sausages, slightly sweet mustard, and a pretzel.
