White Nights attract tens of thousands of tourists to St. Petersburg
A huge number of guests arrive daily in the northern capital of Russia, but from mid-May to the end of July their number is simply mind-boggling: this is the time of White Nights, and romantics from all over the world flock to St. Petersburg. However, besides vacationers, applicants come here to enter institutes, businessmen, and people of art for various exhibitions and international festivals.
It often turns out that hotel and hostel rooms are already booked, so the traveler is helped by daily apartment rental. St. Petersburg, actively developing its status as a tourist center, has been offering tourists and other guests of the city for several years to use apartments located in different parts of the metropolis and in the historical buildings of the city center.
May 2012 will bring the following holidays and festivals to St. Petersburg:
May 12 – The tenth anniversary Smelt Festival, which will be held at the LENEXPO exhibition center. There will be attractions for children, a sports program, concert and entertainment events, quizzes and contests for all ages. And on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, a fish stocking campaign will be held – releasing salmon fry into the sea.
May 19 – The Grand Opening of the Fountains in Peterhof, featuring a costume performance and an unforgettable fountain show, as this year the fully restored sculptural decoration of the Grand Cascade will be presented.
May 20 – At the Satire Theater on Vasilievsky Island, the contemporary dance festival Okno’12 Dance Festival will take place, starting at seven in the evening. On the same day, the annual St. Petersburg holiday "Fencer's Day" will be held at the Peter and Paul Fortress.
May 24 - June 3 – The best young musicians from 14 countries, accompanied by famous orchestras, will perform works as part of the XVII International Festival "Musical Olympus" at the Hermitage Theater and the Academic Chapel, the Mariinsky Theatre, and the D.D. Shostakovich Academic Philharmonia.
May 25-28 – The International Festival of Plastic Dance in memory of Isadora Duncan will be held at the Beloselsky-Belozersky Palace.
May 25 - July 4 – The XX International Music Festival "Palaces of St. Petersburg" will take place. As part of this project, the best works of classical music will be performed in the grand halls of the most famous palaces of St. Petersburg, Gatchina, Peterhof, Tsarskoye Selo, Oranienbaum, and Strelna.
May 25 - July 17 – At the Mariinsky Theatre, audiences will be able to see ballets and hear operas and symphonies as part of the XX International Music Festival "Stars of the White Nights".
Another competition-festival, which will be held for the fifth time in May-June in the Mikhailovsky Garden in front of the Russian Museum, is called "Imperial Gardens of Russia". Visitors will be able to see stunning flower arrangements and modern trends in landscape design here.
And, of course, the apotheosis of May will be the celebration of the founding day of St. Petersburg. As part of it, from May 27 to 29, a jazz concert with performers from around the world will take place on Palace Square, and a carnival procession and a street theater festival, bringing together artists from different countries, will march along Nevsky Prospekt.
In order not to miss all these events, travelers should find in advance daily apartments in St. Petersburg that will be located near the venues of those events that interest them most. And then all that remains is to enjoy the events and relaxation.
