Please note that at present the manufacturer offers three types of these devices, which differ in the type of fuel used for operation. Let us clarify that generators are:
• Gasoline,
• Diesel,
• Gas.
And if the first two designs operate on imported fuel – gasoline or diesel, then the latter must be connected to a centralized gas pipeline, which is not possible in every cottage community. Therefore, gas generators are less in demand, although where installation is possible, they are the optimal option.
The main point when choosing a model of the first two types is to determine for yourself how many kW of electricity are needed for normal functioning of the house. To do this, it is enough to sum up the nominal demand of all electrical appliances in the room and increase the figure by a third – the result will be the desired number. Let us say right away that gasoline generators are weaker than diesel ones.
The next feature is the frequency of use of the device. If you plan to live year-round in an autonomous house, completely abandoning centrally supplied electricity, then a gasoline generator even with a maximum power of about 7 kW may not cope with the owners' needs. It is better to take a diesel device of about 10 kW.
Another option is that you will use the generator on a hike, picnic, fishing trip, or in case of a power outage. In that case, a gasoline-powered unit will suit you just fine. Moreover, it costs about half as much. Just keep in mind that an aluminum engine will last less than a device whose parts are made of cast iron.
And one more thing. A gasoline generator starts even at –20 degrees, while a diesel one starts only down to –5. True, there are diesel models in special leather covers – they are not afraid of cold, but they are much more expensive.
As for installation, the generator is installed in a special room with forced ventilation, since exhaust gases are, unfortunately, quite acrid. Also note that home power stations cannot operate silently, so sound insulation will not hurt either.
